Snetterton: Points make prizes!

Snetterton: Points make prizes!

We knew Snetterton was going to be a tough weekend - the circuit doesn't suit our car.

With three first-gear corners and performance rules meaning we had to run restricted turbo boost, we were classified last or second to last in all the speed traps! However, praise must go to the team and our engineer Richard, who set up a beautiful car to drive, and despite our near 5mph deficit down the straights, the car was epic in the fast corners. This allowed Seb to qualify 4th and I qualified 3rd...a very welcome surprise!

For race one I started 3rd on the grid. We knew it would be difficult race as we had to add the 10 second success penalty from Rockingham to our pit stop. My aim was to try and lasso myself on to the back of the ridiculously fast Lamborghini and build a gap to the rest of the field. At the start I jumped the second Lamborghini and set about hanging on to the #33 Lamborghini. It worked well and I was able to bring the car into the pits after 30 minutes in 3rd, seven seconds clear of the following pack. A great pit stop saw Seb rejoin in 4th and we were happy to cross the line in those positions! Sadly our pit stop was deemed 0.1 second too short and we were given a 30 second penalty dropping us to 7th...a harsh blow considering a near perfect strategy!

Race two saw Seb start from 4th, against some of the best GT drivers in the world. As the field accelerated, the Tordoff Lamborghini braked, Seb tried to avoid it and made contact with Matt Griffin’s Ferrari. Seb dropped back to second from last and we pitted from 7th. The team decided to give me the best shot with the last twenty minutes and I resumed with a new set of tyres. A safety car was deployed during our pit stop allowing me to rejoin at the back of the pack with all the front runners within sight. It was simple sprint to the end, so as the safety car pulled in I launched past the GT4 McLaren. Although we didn't have straight line speed, our car was amazing in the fast corners and under braking.

I quickly dispatched the Team Abba Mercedes and had Duncan Cameron’s Ferrari in my sights. It was immensely fast on the straight, however a late dive into the turn two hairpin put me up to 4th. We were flying. Mark Farmer’s Aston Martin was 3rd, so I pushed, knowing there was only 10 minutes left. He was playing a canny game, defending into the corners and using the Aston’s superior power and traction to close spaces following each tight corner and straight. I was gaining on him through the corners and under braking. With just two minutes left, I couldn’t get close enough to make a strategic move because of the lack of straight line speed. It was going to have to be a calculated lunge. I threw the Bentley down the inside into the second hairpin to cheers from the garage but I was too late on the brakes and overshot slightly, allowing the Aston to regain the position. I crossed the line 0.1 seconds behind, happy knowing I could have done no more and that we’d race at Silverstone, one of our best circuits, with no time penalty.

We’re currently still second in the championship and it’s all to play for. Make sure you join us for the ride!
