Three million cars still show a tax disc

Around three million drivers still have a tax disc in their car, despite there no longer being any legal requirement for them.

Paper tax discs were scrapped in October 2014, but the recent AA-Populus Driver Poll of more than 18,000 AA members found that 11% of drivers still show a tax disc in their car.

Many drivers keep their old disc as a reminder of when the tax is due, while others feel it affects the look of the car and say it looks "weird" without one.

Three fifths (61%) of drivers removed their tax disc when the law changed in 2014, while a quarter (23%) said they had bought other vehicles since 2014 and their new vehicle didn't have one.

Last year, research by uSwitch revealed that three quarters of motorists think the DVLA should bring back tax discs. The price comparison and switching website said that, despite receiving reminders by post, motorists are getting caught out by forgetting their renewal date.

"The DVLA should consider more relevant notifications, like text alerts which have proved successful for the NHS," said Kasey Cassells, insurance expert at uSwitch.

Those who fail to renew their vehicle excise duty (VED) can be fined up to £1,000.

In August, figures from the DVLA showed that fines for unpaid car tax have risen by a third since the paper tax discs were abolished. Motorists were fined a total of £41m due to unpaid VED last year.

Jack Cousens, head of roads policy for the AA, said: "There is a sense of nostalgia with keeping a tax disc, but for many it provides a tax and MOT test reminder too.

"The DVLA is trying to encourage people to update their records so that reminder letters are sent to the correct address, rather than an old one, but with an increase in fines for unpaid VED, there are questions around the process for buying cars privately.

"In the past the vehicle would be sold with the remaining tax intact, but now tax isn't transferable and the onus is on the buyer to tax the vehicle before they drive away with their new purchase.

"It's probably too early to call for the return of the tax disc, but there's clearly still some affection for a little circle of paper on a windscreen!"
